Maintaining Conversation with Boss

I believe many have difficulties maintaining conversation with boss. Maintaining conversation with boss is different from maintaining conversation with friends. You can’t gossip as much like what you did with your friends and on the other hand, you do not want your boss to know you inside out. Also, does conversation with your boss must always be regarding work? In the workplace, having lunch with your boss seems to be a pain in the neck. It can also be quite embarrassing when the conversation reaches a point of dead silence.

From my experience, below are some of the ways to strike and maintain a conversation with boss.

1) Most probably the easiest to start with is to discuss about work as this is the place where you met your boss. However, be aware of the timing and character of your boss. Some people do not like to talk about work during lunch and after work.

2) Ask about what the boss likes in his/her daily life. I am certain that nobody don’t know what they like. If you know a lot about the topic that the boss mentioned, you can even put in your input and branch it out from there.

3) The topic about food. You eat food everyday. Ask them where they can find good food.

4) Talk about your interesting past experiences.

5) Ask where do they stay and do they normally do in their leisure time.

6) If your boss is a guy, from my experience, guys like to talk about soccer, cars model, army experiences, games. There is a great chance to hit the right topic of their interest but for girls, it may be more diverse. No generalization could be given here.

Above are some of the ways to strike a conversation. During a conversation, do not hip hop topics too much. Try to branch out from there or else you will realize that you will run out of questions to ask sooner or later.
