Many people believe that democracy needs political parties, elections, interest groups, and social movements, in order to be functional.  However, in my opinion, individual need to be informed about these functions, in order to distinguish the role it plays in our society. Not all four functions can be considered useful, for it can impairments any strong society. Nevertheless, these four functions are used to show how democratic we are as a society.

​In order to consider political parties, elections, interest group, and social movements to be essential to Americans, first and foremost, individual should know what they are and how they are different from one another. Political parties are people with similar ideas that join together to express their opinions and concern.  Because it is in human natural to have distinctive opinion and conflicts, political parties help balance those different and concerns, in order to prevent the loss of liberty. Furthermore, political parties help the people control and makes policies for the good of everyone. Elections are needed in order to make decisions in choosing the right candidates to represent the people wish. The interest groups, organizes people to share ideas and influence public policy.  While social movement open alliances between people who are connected through their common interest in blocking and affecting public changes. Fundamentally, these four-function work like a stepladder, in order to achieve democracy.

​Although, these fundamental functions are necessary, it is not perfect. Personally, I think political parties and interest group can become dysfunctional.

Some political parties put their personal agenda over the welfare of the people, wasting times and expenses. More often, political parties changes and doesn’t stay within the peoples’ goals.
