The Concept of Ba

Main theme/Idea of the paper

The concept of ba was basically originated by Japanese philosophers Kitaro Nishida and was further enlarged by Shimizu. ‘Ba’ generally means ‘Place’. The main idea in this article was to take on this concept to elaborate the model of knowledge creation. Ba in lay mans term can be seen as a form of shared space to build up relationships. This space can be physical, mental, or any combination between them which helps in creating a platform for advancing individual and collective knowledge. It provides such a platform that integrates all information needed from different intellectual provided by individuals. Ba may also known as the recognition of inner self and there is also a theory discussed in this article i.e theory of existentialism. Ba may have different levels and these levels may be integrated with each other which may transform into a greater ba known as ‘basho’. The SECL (The Spiritual evolution of knowledge creation and self transcending process) model has been discussed in this article which plays an essential role in integrating knowledge as it is a spiritual process of interactions between explicit and tacit knowledge in which socialization is very important. The SECL model is an ongoing process which includes socialization, externalization, internalization and combination of knowledge. Later on Ba is characterized into four steps i.e originating Ba (face-to-face), interacting Ba (peer-to-peer), and exercising Ba (on-the-site), cyber Ba (group-to-group). These characteristics are used in different areas of SECL model as this is also an ongoing process between individual, group and organization. The main idea then revolves around how the companies create Ba. Some of these systems are pursued and developed independently from the hierarchical R&D structure.
