Beans and brews is a local coffee house in Salt Lake City, UT. Small compared to some large organizations. Beans and brews have many franchises in the salt lake valley. Large competition to other brew houses nearby. The organizational structure of this coffee house is very simple compared to the complexity of its larger competitors. This company is organized as a Divisional organization. The goals of this business are to satisfy the customer with reasonable prices while being able to turn a profit to continue to expand its store locations. Other competitors such as Starbucks run their company as a matrix organization on a functional structure. Starbucks is so large that there are stores nation and even worldwide. Matrix structure is the most practical structure for large companies such as Starbucks. They are separated into regions where each region has a specific department. Within each department managers run the stores there are levels of management, Corporate, Regional, Divisional, and store managers. Beans and Brews is a much smaller operation. Each store has a manager that will report their stores progress to the main office. Each manager is the owner/operator of that location. Compared to Starbucks where those managers are the leaders of that particular store and have to report to higher management.

The larger the organization the more complex the organizational functions will be. All businesses have and operate with marketing, finance, Human resources and operations management. Some businesses have departments for each division of the company; some have one person or office to carry out these duties. All functions are necessary for proper business function.
