Mobility has become the prime strength when it comes to mobile commerce, or mCommerce. Technology is increasing rapidly in the mobile phone device industry and allowing customers to use devices for just about everything to operate in their daily lives. Businesses have transformed many of their advertising and services to conform to the high demand of mobile commerce. This paper is written about two companies here locally in my town, Book Exchange and Barnes & Noble, to compare the two according on terms of business model and m-commerce capabilities.

M-Commerce can be defined as the capability of performing commerce via mobile devices whether it be mobile phone, smart-phone, IPad and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). People are using their mobile devices for social media, location, and customer service capabilities while easily on the go. Retailers are taken with HTML5, which is shaping the mobile commerce and retailers are investing large amounts on their mobile sites (Tsirulnik G, 2010). The benefits of mCommerce are highly adaptable including mobile solutions like mBanking which includes access to bank accounts to transfer and check balances, MPayments which provides access to make payments right from user’s mobile phones.

Barnes & Noble is a major corporation here in my town that is very well known by millions of people as the place to go when in need of a book. Barnes and Noble provide a wide variety of options to access their site. In January of 2008 Barnes and Noble recognized the importance of the mobile market and launched a user friendly fully optimized mobile Web. Barnes & Noble became the first to launch a dedicated iPhone application called B&N Bookstore which became a big hit by many customers. Barnes and Noble bookstore has currently ranked a Webby Award for “best mobile shopping” (Butcher D, 2010).
