Crime is an illegal action that the law prohibits doing without consequences for the actions. When a person breaks the law he/or she will have to face those consequences through the criminal justice system. The Criminal Justice System is separated by each individual state and each state maintains three main components which are made up of law enforcement, the courts, and the correction department. Each individual state handles adult and juvenile cases differently. These three components of the criminal justice system all work together to keep from chaos is the country.

Law Enforcement is the first of the major components of the criminal justice system and it is the first life of defense and also the most dangerous part of the criminal justice system. Law enforcement is an important aspect of the criminal justice system it is made up of local police departments and precincts which house the men and women police officers and detectives. These officers and detectives are sworn in to serve and protect the people within their district. The officers and detectives are responsible for investigating crime and apprehending individuals who have broken the law. The detectives and officers are responsible for obtaining the evidence and all information needed for the charges to hold of in the court of law.

The court of law is another component of the criminal justice system and is the second line of action within the criminal justice system and their role is just as important role as law enforcement within the criminal justice system. Within the court system there are defense and prosecution attorneys, judges, and juries and each play their role to make sure that those accused are give a fair trial.
