Plagiarism

One of the biggest arguments that have been talked lately among local and international universities is plagiarism. Approximately 80% of university student confess that they did do plagiarism minimum one time, according to the study by The Center for Academic Integrity. This has shown a great number that we should fear, but yet no one cared enough.

In short words, stealing other people’s words or ideas without recognition are considered as plagiarism. But if we do some paraphrasing to the original is agreeable. Yet, it would be like changing the color of a stolen car when you take someone else’s idea and changing the wording, and of course take granted for it literally.(Moulton & Robinson, 2002)

Plagiarism always known was involved by student in many ranges. According to The State of American: This Generation and The Next (Free Press, July 1996), 58.3% of high school’s student let their peers to copy their work in 1969 and it has increased to 97.5% in 1989. This number shows that plagiarism is indeed a very serious problem. If high school students are already involved with it, it will become worse where they set foot in the university.

Why student plagiarize? Some of the reason came when the time limit is not enough and the devastating feeling will take over seeing too many assignments. Student also cannot differentiate between the act of plagiarism and researching since its looks alike. Some student forgot to paraphrase the original, so its looks like they do plagiarism. While some forget to do citation, some couldn’t find the bibliographical sources, leaving them unable to properly leave the information in their paper. This is the most common factor that student face, that leads them to plagiarism.

There are few ways to prevent the work of plagiarism among students. Teachers and lecturer should take serious part of catching the student who does plagiarism. By doing this, other student will feel more afraid to do plagiarism. So in order...
