Happy Hour

It began with a wonderful time at the park with my family on a lovely but warm Friday afternoon. We were truly parched for a refreshing drink after chasing our daughter around the jungle gym. I asked, “how about a slushy from Sonic?” Without a moment’s pause from my girlfriend she readily agreed. There was no dispute – we were bound for slushes.

Upon arriving at our local Sonic, I was intrigued by the amount of vehicles parked in their carhop stalls. I pulled up to the drive-through and quickly scanned the menu looking for the coldest and most refreshing drink that I could find. Moments passed until I finally realized that their drive-through service had somehow malfunctioned and I was directed to a carhop stall. Somewhat confused by this, I quickly darted into the nearest stall. It seemed we were not the only ones that ventured to Sonic that day on thirst-quenching quest. Nearly all the stalls were full of equally parched patrons.

Fueled by my extreme thirst – that already had its annihilation delayed once – I began uncontrollably smashing the large red circle button labeled “press here to order.” After what seemed like a decade, a stressed out sounding teenage employee's voice crackled through the intercom system, “Welcome to Sonic. Can I take your order?”

“Yes!” I declared. Then it hit me. Originally I planned to order medium drinks but only then realized a medium did not seem justified to slake my lust for a refreshing beverage. Frantically I turned back to the drink size selection: small; medium; and large. That's when I noticed the “Route 44.” It was the largest option and therefore my only option. I rambled off my order to the overworked teenager. I paid no attention to the total cost because at this point price just didn't matter.

Now it was just a waiting game. It was only a drink order, so it shouldn't take long, I assured myself. But even with the air conditioning on at full blast, I was still perspiring. My...
