Reflective Gains

Now that I have successfully concluded the initial two courses of my MBA program and I’m presented with an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of this seemingly negligible accomplishment, I have to ask; “What does this mean for me and what new lessons have I learned”? I believe this will be a beneficial assessment of how I feel about my decision to attempt an MBA program at this stage of my career, act as an intriguing reminder at the completion of my program and become an optimistic reflective reminder of my accomplishment further up the road.

It’s been many years since I’d been in a structured extended learning environment and I was decidedly uncertain about my ability to adjust. Honestly, it hasn’t been an easy adjustment either. Initially, I struggled to structure time for reading and study plans; tutoring sessions were scheduled at all hours of the days and nights. I had a business to run and a new business at that! I had to ask myself, “could I commit enough of me to make it all work”? Additionally, I had to counter the skeptic queries about why I wanted do this at this time in life? What was I trying to prove and what was in for me? These matters were less challenging, but still stressful and at times could be emotionally exhausting.

Although I have a successful career in business, management and as an entrepreneur, I still felt emptiness in my success, a flaw in the blueprint. I believe I had a sense of inadequacy and was intimidated by my perceived educational deficit. Whatever it was or wasn’t, I was committed to pursuing a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). However, I needed to define what my objectives were and what I hoped to gain from the experience. I love my job, so I wasn’t seeking new opportunities.
