As a distance learner the article “Changes in Study Process: Issues of Information Technologies” intrigued me. The article researches information technologies and distance learning in the study process. Information technology and distance learning offers students more education opportunities however it has its disadvantages. The researchers wanted to know the attitudes university students had toward the use of information technology and distance learning.

The researchers used basic research. The information they gathered was for their own knowledge and understanding of information technology and distance learning. Researchers used different methods to collect data. They began with secondary data by analyzing scientific literature. Secondary data is data that the researcher does not have to gather because it already exists (Sekaran, 2003). They found that distance learning provides individuals with the opportunity to acquire an education when they do not wish to use or not have the means to use traditional learning methods.

The researchers also used scales by giving students surveys. The surveys used nominal scales to determine what kind of information technologies students used the most.

The nominal scale broke down the types of information technologies into categories and the students had to choose which one they used most. Researchers found that most students use some form of computer. The researchers also inquired why students used their computers. Of those surveyed 95% used their computers for their studies. Information sourcing and communication were 91% and 94% respectively.

As a result of the research the researchers concluded that a majority of students preferred to use information technologies for searching, evaluating, and using online resources to prepare for oral or written assignments (Ciarniene, Kumpikaite, & Vienazindiene, 2011). This led to the conclusion that students prefer to have a blend of traditional learning and...
