Sterling Journey to High Performance

High performing organizations have a multitude of systems in place that allow them to be successful and efficient in their workings. Human Resources plays a major role in any organization, including their work force. I will be using the Sterling Management model, specifically the South Miami Hospital journey to achieving the Governor’s Sterling Award in 2010 and their practices. The Florida Sterling Council is based on the Malcolm Baldridge Criteria for Performance Excellence. The Sterling Management model includes 7 different categories that are all equally interrelated to be efficient and high performing. This paper will focus on Workforce, Category 5 within this model. According to the Florida Sterling Council (Website, 2011), this category examines how an organization engages, manages, and develops its workforce to utilize its full potential in alignment with the organization’s overall mission, strategy, and action plans. The topics that will be covered are Leading Practices, Recruitment and Career Development, Training and Education, Compensation and Recognition, Health, Safety and Employee Well-Being, Motivating Employees and Performance Appraisals.

Organizations that continuously promote best practices are always striving, looking into the future and do not settle. South Miami Hospital delivers high quality healthcare services to a diverse community. Their guiding principles are quality, service, safety and diversity. The leadership team creates a sustainable organization through 1. Annual strategic planning. 2. Ongoing performance/data review and 90 day action plans if results do not meet the desired results, 3.
