Checkpoint 1: Program Planning & Grant Proposals

As human service organization employees, one can expect to become familiar with program planning and grant proposals. Human service organizations tend to have multiple programs readily available at peoples’ disposal and grant proposals play a huge role in how public agencies receive their funding.

Program planning is an organized process that involves the development and use of activities, such as setting up goals, objectives, activities, and evaluation. It is an on-going process that eventually turns into program development.

When planning new programs, there must be detailed explanations of the current problems being faced. The program needs to fit the agency’s mission statement and values in order to potentially be set in place. Program planning does include research and the use of current events, historical information, and focus groups.

A grant proposal is a written program plan that is specifically developed to gain financial assistance from a funding source to support the proposed services. With grant proposals, there again must be clear, detailed information to show the need for one. Grants generally are used to start new programs amongst an agency or organization. The grant proposal must clearly show what the funds will be used for.

A grant proposal is a specific type of program planning which is directly how the two things relate to one another. Both involve logical thinking and are objective driven. Grant proposals just deal with the financial aspect of a program where as program planning doesn’t deal with finances of the organization or agency.
