1 Australian Media Industry

Australia is an immigration country, owning immigrants from more than 140 countries. With diversified culture and population, diversified media was needed to meet different groups as media is not only a bridge between people with different cultures but also a channel to polymerize their own cultural heritage and communication. The media is overall divided into electronic media and print media. In electronic media area, television, broadcasting and computer are main ways used in communication process. In traditional media field, newspaper and magazines are the dominating ways to transmit information. With the rapid development of new technologies, in modern society, digital media has occupied majority of market share in media market. According to statistics (refer to Appendix 1), Australians averagely spent 12.9 hours on internet, 13.4 hours on radio and 20.8 hours on television with a total of 47 hours on electronic media per week. On the contrary, print media stands in disadvantageous situation. The total time spent on print media is only 4.6 hours, of which 3.1 hours on newspaper and 1.5 hours on magazines (Roy, M, 2010). Obviously, Australians spend much more time on electronic media than print media. Print media as a tradition media is facing huge challenge.

In digital media area, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) are the main news organizations in Australia which provide TV, Radio and online news service, both of which owned by Australian government. The Nine Network, the Seven Network and Network Ten are three major commercial television channels in Australia. And the ABC broadcasting is the most famous radio station in Australia.
