CHAPTER ONE

GOING GREEN APPROACH IN LEBANON

1. Going Green Definition

The conscious decision to decrease the effect of the human ecological footprint is referred to as “Going green”. Two simple examples of ways to make your life more environmentally friendly or “greener” are: recycling the paper you use and buying energy-efficient appliances. You can go green by renovating your entire everyday routine or by tweaking just a few aspects of your life (Quamu, 2). It is also to seek information and practices that can lead to decisions and lifestyles that are more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible, which helps immensely in protecting the environment we and other people live in and sustain its natural resources for generations now and in the future (Middletown Thrall Library).

It can also be called as a movement of a social nature that aims to affect and educate in order to protect and help sustain natural resources and ecosystems. Going Green supports the management of resources in a way that makes them sustainable, and the protection (and when necessary, the restoration) of the natural environment by changing the consumption behavior in each individual. This movement is based on ecology, human rights, and health in its recognition of the importance of humanity as an important participant in ecosystems. The movement is represented by quite a range of organizations (large to young firms). Some even argue that at least some sort of environmental ethics is so critically needed that the broader that range the better (Wekipedi,3).

2. Going Green in Lebanon

The ‘Go Green’ partnership that was implemented in 2002 is one of the pioneering multi-stakeholder initiatives in Lebanon.
