Discipline in High School and Elementary Education

With so many rules and regulation that must followed when educating students with special needs it can be somewhat confusing for new and seasoned teachers alike. Being someone that loves working with special needs students it is important to know how to deal with discipline issues that can occur within the classroom for students with and without special needs. Since I am a beginner in this profession, I want to ensure that all rules are followed but even with students with mild disabilities, issues can arise and they must be addressed immediately. Upon receiving this assignment, I contacted two area schools administrators to seat down and discuss the issues and various concerns that many teachers have to deal with on a daily basis inside the classrooms.

Being a graduate of the New Boston Independent School District, I contacted Mrs. Angela Hastings, the Assistant Principal of the high school and at Liberty Eylau School District our Special Education Administrator Mrs. Misty Betts. I started my interviews with Mrs. Hastings, and then finished out with Mrs. Betts, who schedule was extremely tight but set time to for me to do a sit down interview as well.

With discipline being such a big issue that seems to arise in schools day due to special education students being mainstreamed into regular classes, I was curious to learn what how things had changed in both the High School and Elementary level. Mrs. Hastings shared her thoughts; she said currently special need students are being mainstreamed into the regular classroom which is often instruction that is occurring above their frustration level.
