According to Elder (2009) “Critical thinking is self-guided, self- disciplined thinking that aims to take the reasoning we all do naturally to a higher level”. The process of critical thinking begins with an open mind. It is quite alright to already have an opinion on an issue but you must be willing to at least consider objectively ideas that differ from your own. A true critical thinker is able to make vast decisions at any given time by being able to put plans into effect quickly and efficiently. Of all the researched definitions of the meaning of critical thinking, it is best described by Scriven and Paul in the following draft written for The Center for Critical Thinking:   “Critical Thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action” (2004). This explanation covers every aspect of what is expected of a critical thinker. Being a critical thinker allows a person to become a critical listener, when making complex decisions.

There are three significant concepts learned in this course that has changed future perceptions; new media bias, fallacies, and investigation methods. Throughout the course of class the lesson has taught several different ways to go about critical thinking day to day life. However, there are three significant examples that stand out more than the others. The first that comes to mind is Chapter 3 of Ruggiero, V.R (2012). The art of thinking: A guide to critical and creative thought”, titled “Broaden Your Perspective”. The focus on this chapter was what it means to be an individual and the habits that could help you reinforce your true individuality.
