In this paper we will be discussing information lifecycle management and how this will affect the relationship between IT managers and operations managers. IT managers tend to concentrate on issues related exclusively to IT, while operations managers tend to be more concerned data availability and business benefit. But first we will discuss what information lifecycle management is and the value it presents an organization.

Information Lifecycle Management is more commonly abbreviated ILM and is the practice of applying policies to information from cradle to grave. ILM has been used for over three decades and has its beginnings in the management of information via some physical format. ILM oversees the complete phase of a information from its beginning to its end. At any time during its existence, information can be classified as a record by documenting a business transaction. IBM is a company that has a long history in information management that dates back to the 1950’s. According to the company, Information lifecycle management is a strategy to effectively manage information through the entire lifecycle in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. IBM also suggests that ILM should be implemented in manageable stages focusing first on areas of greatest return. The six stages identified by IBM are data rationalization, storage rationalization, tiered storage environment, information management, storage process, organization, technology and governance and Archiving and information retention

Lifecycle management is gaining momentum throughout business and government. This is a directly related to the changes in the business environment and an increase in awareness and understanding from lifecycle management practices producing great returns on investment.
