Channeling Students into Special Services

For many students, there is no need for any assistance to facilitate the learning process; however, for some students there are needs to be enrolled in a special education program. According to the Ministry of Education for the Province of British Columbia, a special education program is defined as “a supplemental program provided by schools to assist students, identified as having “special requirements”, in achieving a Certificate of Graduation and/or other outcomes as specified in the student’s Individual Education Plan (Province of British Columbia Ministry of Education, 2011).” In order for a student to be successfully placed in a special education program, some different things must occur.

The first thing that has to happen is for the teacher to get to know the student in order for the teacher to successfully become the child’s advocate. Once the teacher gets to the position where the student’s needs are identified, then the steps required to get the student into a special education program can be initiated. The first thing that must be done is for the teacher to draft a letter that outlines the student’s strengths and weaknesses, along with why it is that the student needs to be enrolled in a special education program. Upon the completion of this letter, the letter is sent to the school’s guidance counselor. From the guidance counselor, the letter would be sent to the principal and also to the school district administration office for the county that the school is located in.

Once the letter is received within the school district, the letter is reviewed in great detail and the administration takes time to carefully look at the student’s strengths and weaknesses in order to make a determination as to whether a special education program is necessary and could be beneficial to a...
