“It is about being alone when you are not really alone and about being scared all the time.” (4).

The message the author is trying to convey in the quotation is that even though you are in jail with other people, you are still alone and that it is not easy being alone. The speaker of this quotation, Steve, seemed to be feeling lonely and scared. Even if he was not alone physically, he felt alone emotionally. He was feeling isolated and frightened when he was in jail. I agree with the author. There is no one there to comfort him. No one can help him, he is all on his own.

“Ain’t no use putting the blanket over your head, man. You can’t cut this out; this is reality. This is the real deal.” (8).

This quotation illustrates reality - the state of the world as it really is rather than as you might want it to be. The quote tells that no matter what you think or desire of the reality to be, it is going to be as it really is. Steve tries to hide his head under a blanket to avoid going to the first day of trial. He didn’t want to face the reality. He is trying to avoid reality.

"I can hardly think about the movie, I hate this place so much. But if I didn't think of the movie I would go crazy. All they talk about in here is hurting people." (45)

The quote says that imaging the whole situation as a movie helps him live it. The primary theme of the story is to examine how a person who commits a crime is arrested, convicted, tried, and punished. He paints horrible images of life in jail. So by making a movie of his experience comforts him.

“It’s like a man looking down to see his own son and seeing a monster instead.” (116).

The quote shows how Steve’s father feels about Steve. I was very shocked by this quote. The comparison between a son and a monster is not very common. This quote holds a lot of emotion and meaning behind it. This quote is sensitive.

“I wanted to be away from this place so bad, away from this place, away from this place.” (130).
