Learning Team Topic Proposal

Our team, learning team B, would like to use cognitive behavioral therapy as our topic for the week five assignment. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the term for a collection of therapies that address behavioral issues (National Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists, 2010). Cognitive behavioral therapy uses different approaches to treat behavioral issues, and it focuses on the idea that thoughts cause actions and not external stimuli (National Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists, 2010). Cognitive behavioral therapy can be used to address several behavioral issues, such as depression, schizophrenia, and other psychological disorders. In a review, it was found that it is especially effective for treating depression (Butler, Chapman, Forman, & Beck, 2006). Butler et al. (2006) reviewed the cognitive behavioral therapy’s effectiveness on several different clinical illnesses by using meta-analysis. They found that cognitive behavioral therapy could be successfully used for a variety of disorders. Clients are taught to change behaviors by addressing the thoughts that cause the behavior. For example, a client may spend a session addressing different issues of his or her life that need improvement. Then the individual will be given a set of principles to use as a guideline in various situations, and then he or she will be assigned “homework,” to address (Martin, 2012). The homework allows the client to work on different parts of his or her life to improve a section at a time.

If this choice is taken, we would like to use an approach called the normative system.
