Scenario 1: Videoconferencing

Videoconferencing gives individuals, in distant locations, the ability to participate in meetings classes and more with the utilization of computer-based networks, speakers, web cameras, microphones and screens. In the next few paragraphs, I will investigate videoconferencing equipment and software offerings of Cisco Systems, Inc.

Cisco Systems, Inc is the world’s leading supplier of videoconferencing equipment, computer networking products, systems and different services. The company’s product line includes routers, switches, remote access devices, protocol translators, Internet service devices and networking and network management software, all of which link together geographically dispersed local-area networks (LANs), wide-area networks (WANs), and the Internet (International, 2000). Their routers pioneered support for multiple protocols or data transmission standards, and could therefore link together different kinds of networks, those having different architectures and those built on different hardware, such as IBM-compatible personal computers, Apple Macintosh computers, UNIX workstations, and IBM (International, 2000). The technology that is used in videoconferencing systems is the compression of audio and video streams in real time. The hardware or software that performs compression is called a codec. The software that is used enables point-to-point and multipoint video conferences, and with this type of software you are able to conduct live conferences at different sites by the utilization of computer networks which transmit video, audio and text data. Cisco uses the H.323 standard, which was approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1996 to promote compatibility in videoconference transmissions over IP (H.323, 2000-2012).
