Demonstrative Communication

Communication as we know it comes in many different forms falling into the different categories of verbal or nonverbal communication. The basic form of communication is the act of sending and receiving messages whether verbal or nonverbal. Verbal communication can be both oral and written communication (such as letters and emails) whereas nonverbal communication includes body language (such as body posture and facial expressions), eye contact, and hand gestures.

Demonstrative communication is nonverbal, unwritten communication. The use of body language can be subtle or more “demonstrative” as described in Nonverbal Communication Says A lot, 2012 Speech Improvement Resources. Demonstrative communication can stand alone but often times are used to reinforce verbal communication such as using hand gestures or different facial expressions to enhance the message. For example when being introduced to someone in order to enhance the message that you are pleased to meet them and interested in dealing business with them, you would want to not only say hi you would want to shake their hand and greet them with a smile. If you would greet them with a frustrated look or not make eye contact with them they may get the impression that you are not interested in conducting business with them. Another good example is the way that someone presents themselves when going for an interview. Two individuals with the same exact qualifications and experience can go into an interview with the same individual and the one that dresses appropriately and demonstrates more interest through their body language will likely be the one to get the position.

Demonstrative communication can be negative as well as positive and I would have to say that the most taboo nonverbal form of communication is tattoos. Though tattoos are not as taboo as they were 20 years ago they still can leave a negative...
