1. Introduction
Through doing the research required I have become increasingly aware of the fact that the reason Borderline Personality Disorder (BDP) is such a difficult diagnosis and assessment to make is that it is a topic that hasn’t been “exposed” as much as the rest of the personality disorders that are present. And because of this, it seems many of the “behaviors’” that (BDP) patients exhibit and express, are closely related to that of other personality disorders, and are therefore given the wrong diagnosis and treatment plan.
2. Problems with assessing Borderline Personality Disorder
* Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex and challenging illness. (Hoffman, 2007)
* The diagnosis has been challenged with the notion that it can be explained by other co morbid conditions, or as a variant of axis I disorders such as mood or impulse control disorders (Goodman, 2009)
* An assessment is also difficult as their sensitivity to rejection, impulsiveness and manipulative behavior to capture the attention of others, often have them “quitting” their treatment programs after a couple months. (Goodman, 2009)
* Patients respond poorly and it is personally troubling to the therapist and the treatment team. (Kerberg, 2009)
