Today's Media

In today's society the media environment is growing complex. The rapid growth of media has led to controversy. Today's media environment includes television, films, home video, computer games and the Internet. All of these methods of media have influences on our families in our everyday lives. It is up to us to make the best of the media. We should try to look at media in a positive way because it is capable of being a great tool in the raising of a family.

Violence is in all the different areas of media and it is becoming a major concern. Children of every age are exposed to media violence everyday. Sometimes programs are not suitable for children and it is up to the parents to make these decisions. Parents need to be more aware of what there children are exposed to. The best way to do this is to keep a strong connection with your child. Your advice and opinions are always very important. Another way to keep your children from violence in the media is to get involved. This way you can monitor what your children are watching. In my opinion and experiences with the media I believe that some programs are not suitable for children but some are. Media in a whole has also played its part to prevent children from being exposed to violence. For example television programs that contain violence, language and sexual content are usually shown from Monday through Friday in the late morning to early afternoon or in the late night hours. Programs suitable for children are played on weekends in the early mornings and late afternoon hours. All media programs have also been rated. The ratings usually pop up before a program airs telling you what is suitable and what’s not. Increased technology has also helped limit violence. Television sets now come equipped with parental control. This gives parents the capability to block out television channels they don’t want their children to watch. This technique is growing in popularity everyday.
