Checkpoint: Bill of Rights

After reading the Bill of Rights, the amendment that is most important to me is amendment one, which states religion, speech, assembly, and petition. Freedom of religion means that we have the right to worship God, or not, as we believe in. Therefore we are allowed to practice our faith in the manner we choose, as long as that manner does not break the laws of the land or infringe on the rights of others. Freedom of speech has such a simple meaning to me; I have the ability to voice my personal opinion. This amendment is important because it guarantees that you can speak your mind without fear of persecution from those who might not like what you say. I believe all amendments are important however the amendment that I would least care for is amendment three “Quartering of soldiers”. The Third Amendment prohibits soldiers from being quartered in a private home without the consent of the owner. However I think if this amendment was removed today nobody would notice the difference. If I was suddenly arrested and tried for a crime I may have or may have not committed, the amendment that I believe would be most important is amendment five. It establishes your right not to have to incriminate yourself and essentially keeps the government from holding too much power in the judicial system. The Fifth Amendment gives people the right not to testify against themselves in court. You can say “I plead the fifth” if you are on trial for committing a crime, and this would mean you do not have to say anything in court.
