Abstract

Since the September 11th terrorists attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon in the United States, there has been much concern worldwide with levels of community emergency preparedness. Disasters can occur at any time and without warning. A disaster is a tragedy that negatively affects society or the environment. A disaster can be classified in two broad categories. The first is natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes. While preventing a natural disaster is very difficult, measures such as good planning which includes mitigation measures can help reduce or avoid losses. The second category is manmade disasters. These include hazardous material spills, infrastructure failure or bio-terrorism. In these instances surveillance and mitigation planning are invaluable measures towards avoiding or lessening losses from these events. This paper properly describes how a disaster preparedness plan should be formatted to obtain the most effective measures for survival and preparation.

Disaster Preparedness Plan

The key to effective disaster planning is to prepare and plan for disasters. When individuals prepare the will be aware of all situations which are likely to occur. The purpose of planning is to put in place policies and guidelines necessary to protect lives and the amount of injuries. Knowing what to do in the event of a disaster is the first step in creating a disaster plan. Then a detailed disaster plan can be created based on what could happen. It means that you find out all you can about disasters. Then you get ready for them. This will enable individuals to respond appropriately to the disaster. The third step is to create a checklist of supplies needed in each disaster that is likely to happen in the area. The last step is to practice and maintain the disaster plan.
