Differentiating Practices as a Supervisor

Supervisors tend to look for guidance when situations occur that they can refer to when at work. The types of supervisor practices that have been of help focusing on incidents were having effective communication, problem solving skills, and the use of critical thinking skills. Also, other supervisor practices that are of help are being able to provide feedback, having collaboration, because it alters relationships by identifying that individuals are in this together, provide clear expectations to support the growth and development while improving instructional practices (Zepeda, 2007).

An incident that occurred while being employed as a supervisor of a partial-after-school program that could make one feel good was being able to make the decision to allow the staff to feel appreciated for their hard work and the clients’ they serviced feel equal. The decision that had to be made was to either allow or not allow for the high risks adolescents and staffs attend the holiday events. There were many days of being challenged as a supervisor with staff working with clients who were very oppositional, defiant when they were provided with clear directives and expectations of the program.

Communication is one of the most important skills that a supervisor utilizes on a daily basis. It was learned that clients who were constantly displaying inappropriate, non- compliant, and negative behaviors were not given many chances to redeem themselves. The clients needed for someone to communicate to them that they have the opportunity and ability to be a part of something positive in order to improve their behavior. Therefore, the decision was made that no staff would remain behind with clients who are considered high risk.
