There are several characteristics and degrees of severity to Autism. According to (Turnbull,Turnbull,&Wehmeyer,2010) states “Autism has six characteristic’s : (1) atypical language development,(2)atypical language development,(3)repetitive behavior,(4)problem behavior,(5) sensory and movement disorder, and (6) differences in intellectual functioning”. People will of use terms to describe the severity of autism as mild to severe. Communication is affected in several ways children often have echolalia, may speak not at all, suffer from delayed speech and may not engage in conversations. Autistic children tend to imitate what someone else says. Social development is affected because they may lack eye contact with someone who is talking with them face to face or understand social cues. Although autism can be a devastating disorder to a child it can be it can seem normal to the individual with the disorder.

Repetive behavior often involves showing aggression or resistances to change .They may become angry if routines change. Sensory issues can involve the texture of different foods they can chew foods up and spit back out what they eat. Bright lights can have an effect on their sight. Intellectual functioning varies with each and individual child. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fourth Edition, text revision Disorders on the autism spectrum are neurological disorders. For example, there five classified by the (DSM-IV-TR) :( 1) Autism (2) Asperger syndrome (3) Rett syndrome (4) childhood disintegrative disorder (5) Pervasive developmental disorder. (Smith, 2005)In a study done by Dr.Stephen Bauer his overview of Asperger syndrome states that it is inconclusive if Asperger is a milder form of autism”.
