Introduction
A portfolio analysis
For a large portion of the population of rural Maine, Eastern Maine Medical Center conducts and provides the majority of health care, whether it be primary or intensive levels, (EMMC, 2012). It currently operates and retains 75% of the overall health care market for the surrounding area, as well as the northern 2/3 of the state. Geographical area and the rural nature of the state, make health care access a statewide issue, and thus EMMC has broadened their scope of practice by offering a variety of health care services to the local population.
Strengths
EMMC possesses several strengths that have enabled it to be the largest health care provider in the area. Outreach clinics are an important part in improving the level of access to several different regional facilities. EMMC provides these clinics in a hub and spoke configuration, allowing smaller, less equipped facilities the ability to utilize the quality and levels of care that EMMC can offer patients within their local area, (EMMC, 2012). Communication and number of physicians that operate within the EMMC community totals upwards of 300, and several conduct their own individual practices which have the ability to utilize and transfer patient care directly, without pause or having to change providers. The continuity of care is reinforced by their highly regarded IT department, enabling elite transfer of information between facilities. EMMC also has recently upgraded their entire facility, which now houses a 411 bed capability. EMMC also attained a rank in the top 10% nationally for several quality and care categories, (EMMC, 2012). Geographical location is a major strength for the organization.
