Brilliance Ict Scanners: Brilliance Everywhere

Medical Imaging has progressed from Wilhelm Roentgen’s original cathode ray tubes used in crude diagnosis in the late 1890’s to an amazing array of machines that utilize cathode rays, magnets, radio frequencies, radioisotopes and a host of other technologies that continue to advance at breakneck speed.

One of the modalities used in Healthcare Imaging is the CT Scan, or computed tomography scan whereby images of internal organs are created by x-ray tubes that surround a patient and spin creating slices of the body that can be reconstructed or full 3D images that give precise detail about organs and blood vessels.

The potential market for this diagnostic tool is limited only by imagination. In addition to human patients, CT’s are used in diagnosing animal ailments as well as in some archeology applications. As disease identification, intervention and management become more important components of the healthcare focus, the need for equipment that aids in such diagnoses increases. There is also increasing demand for state of the art imaging to aid in surgical and other interventional applications.

The geographical focus of our research project was the medical community in the United States. The equipment focus is the Brilliance iCT Scanner produced by Philips.

Philips is a global equipment manufacturer based in the Netherlands. Healthcare is one of their three business units. Philips vies with several other global firms with similar production units, including GE, Siemens and Toshiba. Each company has its own line of ct scans at different price breaks with various technologies. The most advanced technologies available today include 3D imaging, high definition imaging, 320 slice and rapid reconstruction.
