Research suggests that many common food additives cause significant negative health effects in adults and children such as neurological disorders, respiratory diseases and allergies.

Michael Jacobson, born in 1943 holds a Ph.D in microbiology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He co-founded the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) in 1971. Jacobson has been a leader in requiring that all food and most drinks contain nutrition labels. He is currently a secretary on the board of directors for the CSPI. David Schardt is a senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Schardt has his graduate degree in nutrition and biochemistry from Oregon State University. Schardt has many articles on food, nutrition and dietary supplements. In this report the authors research 23 studies of the effect of food dyes and other food additives on the behavior of children with behavioral problems including but not limited to ADHD. The majority of the studies show that the children’s behavior worsened after being exposed to artificial food colors. The report also goes into what parents as well as governmental and private agencies can do to assist in modifying children’s diets by removing food dyes and communicating to the public the importance of doing so. The authors suggest the Feingold diet, which eliminates not only artificial colorings, but also artificial flavorings, artificial sweeteners(acesulfame-K, aspartame, saccharin,sucralose), and several preservatives (BHA,BHT, and TBHQ) (Jacobsen, Schardt, 1999) This source will assist me in writing my paper as it provides an abundance of information ranging from a basic...
