DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF HYDRAULIC RAM PUMP

INTRODUCTION

* Hydraulic ram pumps are water-lifting devices that use the energy of water falling from a small height to lift a small part of that amount of water to a much greater height.

* In this way, water from a spring or stream in a valley can be pumped to a village or irrigation scheme on the hillside.

* The main and unique advantage of hydraulic ram pumps is that with a continuous flow of water, a hydraulic ram pump operates automatically and continuously with no other external energy source such as electricity or fuel.

* It uses a renewable energy source (stream of water), hence ensures low running cost.

OBJECTIVES

* To design and fabricate a device which will pump water without any consumption of fuel and electricity.

* Testing the model in actual conditions at a nearby water-fall.

* To achieve eco-friendly method of pumping.

* To attain maximum efficiency than the existing system by enhancing its performance characteristics.

WORKING

* To use a ram pump, we need a source of water situated above the pump.

* We will connect a pipe from a source of water to the pump.

* The pump has a valve that allows water to flow through this pipe and build up speed.

* Once the water reaches its maximum speed, this valve shuts.

* As it shuts, the flowing water develops a great amount of pressure in the pump because of its inertia. The pressure force opens a second valve.

* High-pressure water flows through the second valve to the delivery pipe (which has an air chamber to allow the delivery pipe to create as much high pressure as possible during the impulse).

* The pressure in the pump falls. The first valve re-opens to allow water to flow and build up momentum again. The second valve closes.

* The cycle repeats.

* The delivery pipe can rise some distance above both the pump and the source of water. For example, if the pump is 10 feet below...
