Materials and Methods:

The prospective, cross sectional study was conducted over 14 months from June 2010 to July 2011. The study group consisted of all the patients with acute watery diarrhoea visiting OPD/Emergency department of our hospital with the following criteria:

Inclusion criteria: Patients fulfilling all the under mentioned criteria were included

□ Age ≤ 5 Years

□ Acute presentation ≤ 7 days

□ Watery diarrhoea (with change in normal stool consistency - watery stool with or without vomiting)

□ Diarrhoea needing either oral or intravenous hydration.

□ Diarrhoea needing an emergency visit to hospital.

Exclusion criteria:

□ Bloody diarrhoea

□ Immunocompromised state

□ Vaccinated against Rotavirus

180 patients fulfilled the criteria and were included in the study. Period of study was from 1st June 2010 to 31st July 2011.

All the patients visiting P D Hinduja National Hospital and MRC were evaluated with detailed present and past history of the complaints, feeding habits, vaccination history and socioeconomic status.

Detailed clinical examination was performed including vital parameters, signs of dehydration, associated complication and assessing their need for hospitalization as well as IV/oral rehydration therapy.
