CASE ANALYSIS: SAVEMORE

Synthesis

Savemore Corporation is a huge grocery chain, comprising of 400 retail supermarkets. One of its branches is Store 5116, where the case is set. Store 5116 employs more than 50 personnel, which makes it as one of the most-manned shops of Savemore. Given the huge staff, the general manager stands with a very crucial role. For 6 years, Store 5116 has been led by a well-loved manager, Mr. Wally Shultz. He is dearly regarded by his staff because of his approachability, helpfulness and generosity. He even lets his staff go home earlier to catch the bus and allows them to call him at a first-name basis. However, Mr. Shultz was eventually transferred to another store, which caused shock and discomfort to most employees.

Store 5116 was later led by Mr. Clark Raymond, who was much younger than Mr. Shultz. Furthermore, he implored a significantly different leadership style, rattling most of the employees. As an Ivy League graduate, he was keen at efficiency and was firm on improving Savemore’s financial standing. This new style has then caused a problematic working relationship with the staff, especially with rants coming from the older groups. They were wishing to get Mr. Shultz back, without knowing that he was actually demoted by the other branch, due to inefficiency. Many especially disliked how Mr. Raymond fired people, how workload has increased and how stricter he run the branch. He was seen as a complete opposite of Mr. Shultz. Much worse, he was even rumored to play favorites and as someone with an affair with the bookkeeper. The day came when the employees’ ordeal reached its worst. The supply of grocery bags came short, which caused panic and disorder among the employees, and resulted to the branch closing earlier than intended.
