Purpose

The purpose of this memo is to analyze my negotiation interview while focusing on how I can better prepare myself for future negotiations.

Salary Negotiation

* What did I do to prepare?

* I studied the applicant’s resume thoroughly.

* I wrote down key arguments to use for each negotiated issue.

* I practiced role playing the negotiation with my wife, who makes a career in Human Resources.

* I prepared before the negotiation what issues I would be lenient or strict on.

* I set a maximum and minimum point value I would be satisfied with in the negotiation.

* Who played the recruiter and applicant role in the negotiation?

* Applicant - Chris Welch (Sarah Ketcham)

* Recruiter – Kim Carlton (Nathan Beeler)

* How did the negotiation process work?

* I guided the negotiation process by introducing each issue for discussion separately.

* I would give Sarah the chance to articulate on each topic first for the majority of the interview.

* We gave each other an opportunity to express our opinions on each subject.

* If we both agreed on a subject, we immediately finalized the subject in the negotiation.

* If we had a disagreement on a subject, we would set the issue aside and discuss it later in the negotiation.

* After we talked about all the subjects in the negotiation, we came back to discuss our problematic issues to try to find a resolution.

* What were the final results of the negotiation?

* Vacation time is always important to Sarah because of family, but it is not a high priority right now starting at a new job.
