Title: Recognizing and Establishing Ethical/Unethical Behavior

Abstract:

We all have what we would call a moral compass. They all differentiate in extent to how we follow them, the direction in which they point, and the classification system that they represent. In any business or professional setting morality or ethics is always a source of concern when it comes to practices, business dealings, and treatment of employees, customers, and the public as whole. The degree to which ethical standards are practiced and followed by any institution will largely impact the success and profitability of that institution. My question is if these principles are so vital to the success of these firms, why are ethical or should I say unethical practices such a concern for each and every business? The largest reason unethical behavior is prevalent, is because we are dealing with a wide array of people in these settings. Every single one of us does things from time to time that may be questionable from a morality or ethical standpoint. Whether out of character or not, anyone of us can stray from our moral compass for any variety of reasons. What I would like to discuss here is why these things occur and ways of recognizing and dealing with those situations in a professional and ethical manner. We will discuss the basic characteristics of why individuals make poor decisions, how to resist requests to act unethically, and hoe to lead in an ethical manner.

Common Characteristics of Poor Decision-Making

Many times individuals make poor decisions because they are in a rush, follow a bad example, aren’t informed of the right or proper way to do things, or they take the easy way out to get the job done the quickest and easiest way possible. In all of these examples, it comes down to taking your time, doing the necessary research and background work, and following the proper procedure for doing the task or making...
