Gay Marriage

MGT 301 Critical Thinking and Writing

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These powerful words are found in the United States Declaration of Independence. The Rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness are our fundamental principles of freedom. Homosexuals live under the same Constitution as Heterosexuals and their basic Right of the pursuit of Happiness is being denied.

Gay marriage is an ongoing debate in this country. Religious and conservative individuals in society deem same sex marriage as immoral. These conservatives claim marriage is identified as a union between a man and a woman to produce offspring to ensure the continuance of society. Therefore since same sex couples are incapable of producing children therefore a marriage would not be legal. Also, same sex couples do not provide the optimum environment in which to raise children. If one ‘steps outside of the box’ and takes a look around they would see under educated, lower class single parents raising children in the ghettos of our country. The union between man and woman was most certainly there but not the marriage but their fundamental rights are not being challenged. These single parents are now dependent on society to survive. Many utilize a welfare system which we as taxpayers fund. One must wonder if this kind of environment is optimum to raise children and challenge if this environment is better than a same sex middle class couple could provide.

Journalist Deb Price is a syndicated columnist whose column focuses on gay and lesbian issues wrote, “...all (arguments) seem to echo the debates heard in the late 1960’s when the morality of racially mixed marriages was being debated.”...
