Palmetto Health, in South Carolina, is the region’s most comprehensive, largest, locally owned, health care resource. Founded in 1998 through the merging of Richland Memorial hospital and Baptist hospital, Palmetto Health emerged as the leading health care agency in the region. Palmetto Health boasts five nationally accredited hospitals, Palmetto Health Richland and Baptist located in Columbia, the Heart Hospital and Children's Hospital adjacent to the Richland hospital in Columbia, and Baptist Easley Hospital in Pickens County. Palmetto Health accounts for 70% of the medical care for Richland county residents and more than 55% of the health care for Richland/Lexington County combined (Palmetto Health, 2011).

Facilities

Palmetto Health is a full service care resource. Palmetto Health Richland, one of the largest and most progressive hospitals in the Southeast, provides care to insured and uninsured patients. Voted the best of the best in a local newspaper survey and being named in the top “100 Best Places to Work”, the hospital’s employees are willing to go out of their way to help patients and visitors. With a vision statement, “To be remembered by each patient as providing the care and compassion we want for our families and ourselves” (Palmetto Health, 2011). Palmetto Health Richland demonstrates why they are considered the premier hospital in the area. The University of South Carolina medical program partners with Palmetto Health Richland. The hospital serves as a teaching facility for medical and dental residents, nurses, and medical assistants. Specialty services at this highly technological hospital include high-risk obstetrics, neurology, oncology, orthopedics, psychiatry, neurosurgery, cardiology, nephrology, neonatology, medical/surgical services, and pediatrics (Palmetto Health, 2011).
