You are the CEO of a large sporting club and are concerned about volunteer

turnover. You plan to conduct some exit interviews. What would you ask them

and why? What can you think of to retain your current volunteers?

What would I ask them and why?

Before some exit interviews, I must clearly realize the motivation behind them fist of all. The person's extrinsic motivation and intent cannot be control by non-profit organizations except intrinsic motivation. The motivation for volunteer work is usually divided into extrinsic and intrinsic motivation (Amabile, Hill, Hennessey & Tighe, 1994), the two types of motivation could co-exist (Deci & Ryan, 1985). The people who want to join in the non-profit because of their interest in the organization's goals, and be willing to do to achieve organization's objectives (Shin & Kleiner, 2003). Volunteers gain satisfaction with the pay they are giving. This is intrinsic motivation. extrinsic motivation is including strengthen interpersonal relationship and enhancing human capital. According the research in past, it showed that the non-profit organization of volunteers more emphasis on intrinsic rewards (Meier & Stutzer, 2004). In other words, the intrinsic motivation of the volunteer workers is important than extrinsic motivation.

I want to clearly understand the real reason that each volunteer leave. Therefore, I will ask the following indirect question in order to make them feel more at ease.

Use these questions to reflect on reasons of leaving nonprofit for volunteers.

1. Would you like tell me our organization’s values and mission?

If not, volunteers do not understand their exciting value.

2. Discuss how to improve the work environment in organization?

If yes, it means that we need to improve the work environment for volunteers in the in organization

3. What do you expect from a volunteer?

If no, it means that we need provide clear pathways for volunteer.
