A Diamond Personality

Personality traits have a profound influence on an individual’s success and are molded by each person’s background, experiences, and motivations. However, certain personality traits can overshadow other traits and can either be complimentary to those other traits or can contribute to a contradictory manner. The contents of this essay will analyze the personality traits of Oscar Rodriquez in the case study of “A Diamond Personality” in reference to the factors contributing to his success, the Big Five assessment, core self-evaluation, and proactive personality.

There are characteristics about Oscar Rodriquez that contributed to his success more so than “in the right place at the right time.” The factors the writer think contributed to Rodriquez’s success were that he was a minority who was ambitious and motivated to succeed. In 1985, Rodriquez moved to Gainesville, Florida, from Puerto Rico possessing the ability to speak little English, but he did not let that disadvantage stop him. Even with his language barrier, Rodriquez supported himself by working at a local mall while attending community college. Although skeptical, after graduation Rodriquez took the advice of his roommate’s girlfriend about working at a local jewelry store. Nevertheless, with no experience, Rodriquez he received his Diamonds and Diamonds Grading certification.

In the writer’s opinion, Rodriquez would score relatively well on the Big Five dimensions of personality. According to Robbins & Judges (2009), the Big Five models is a characteristic assessment that identifies and classifies personality traits, such as extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness to experience. The extraversion dimension represents the strong leadership, take charge, and assertive attitude.
