The Branches of the United States Military

A soldier is a generic name that is associated with the military, but it really only applies to the Army. Everyday someone makes the same mistake calling a military member by the wrong generic title. To an outsider this might not seem like an issue but to the proud men and women who serve it’s an insult. This quote sums it up “All kidding aside, these inter-service rivalries serve to build on culture and pride in service. But, don’t let the nonsense and joking fool you — once there’s a mission on the table, professionalism prevails and it doesn’t matter what branch of service they’re in, service members all work toward the common goal” (Garret & Hoppin, 2009). While it is not done out of disrespect it is just a lack of knowledge on the Untied States Military. The U.S. Military is a symbol of strength and freedom, but do the majority of people understand what each branch does? The truth is a besides few difference like the uniform the service branches all serve the same purpose.

The United States Military consist of five branches, all with one goal in mind, assuring the freedom for the U.S. and its citizens. The branches are the U.S. Army, U.S Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Coast Guard and the fall under the National Security Act of 1947. The U.S. Military is under the control of civilians that are appointed by the President of the United States to the Department of Defense (DoD), which headed by the Secretary of Defense. “Under the Secretary of Defense, there are three military departments: The Department of the Army, the Department of the Air Force, and the Department of the Navy” (Powers, 2011). In times of war or conflict, they are under control of the President of the United States.
