Information Systems Supporting Business Processes

Information Systems and business processes go hand-in-hand in today’s society. Organizations throughout the world utilize Information Systems in everyday business needs ranging from simple file access to more complicated money transactions. With a system that is already in place there is always room for improvement to better the end user experience. Information systems supported business processes in my last employer by providing a means of communication, inventory tracking/engineering change versioning, and human resource data systems. These are only a few examples of how information systems supported business processes in my previous employer.

Communications is important to any business and their processes. Information systems provides that means by providing email access, instant messenger chat, Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP) for phone access, and video conferencing. Information systems created the servers necessary for email to flow in and out of the organization so that people could communicate with both internal and external users. Instant messenger was implemented within the company in order to help communication by allowing end users to contact one another via a quick message rather than an email. Emails are read at the user’s discretion and when they decide they want to read email, but instant messenger pops-up a chat box allowing them to know that a colleague is trying to reach them. Voice over Internet Protocol, otherwise known as VoIP, people found an effective method to have phone service for a minimal cost. This allowed more freedom for calling overseas to vendors or other corporate offices around the world. Information Systems supported this process by providing the servers that hosted the VoIP host software, usually Cisco CallManager, created user profiles/voicemail boxes, and had it all integrated with Exchange in order for users to be able to get their voicemails in their email...
