Motivational Concepts

Motivational concepts assist humans to achieve goals throughout life. Drive theory plays an integral role in motivation both intrinsic and extrinsic. The drive theory is one of three grand theories of motivational concepts. Motivation has been traced back to the ancient Greeks. Three of the Greek Philosophers has beliefs that motivation was a part of a hierarchically arranged soul. At the primate level was hunger and sex; the competitive aspects were honor and shame, and the highest level decision-making. Motivation is inherent in everyone and plays a role in thinking, emotions, success, and development on both personal and professional level. Many theories exist on motivation from grand to mini-theories with grand theories as will, instinct, and drive (Reeve, 2009).

Motivating Employees in the Workplace

Motivating employees can be a challenge for a leader of an organization. The issue with motivation is the changing definition depending upon employee. One employee may have money as a priority another may have time-off as a priority and another may want recognition and empowerment with the responsibility (Zahorsky, 2011). A better strategy is for leader to indentify the lack of motivation in the organization. An employee survey can help to identify employee issues that may affect motivation. Once the issues are identified the leader can create an environment that motivated the employees. Motivated employees are a benefit to any organization. Motivated employees tend to have a positive attitude, take pride in responsibilities, and are more productive.
