Boys & Girls Clubs of America began in 1860 with a group of women in Hartford, Conn. They believed that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative. They organized the first Club providing new opportunities for the young men. A cause was born. In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. Year after year children are left at home without adult supervision; increasing odds for them find trouble in the streets. The Boys& Girls of America wants young people to know their worth and that the community does care about them.

The Club programs and services aim promote and enhance the development of boys and girls in their clubs by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. The club provides educational growth, career paths, building character, teaches leadership, health, life skills, arts, sports, and recreation opportunities.
