Organizational Leadership

The organization that I am currently doing my clinical hours at is called Methodist West. My preceptor is the nurse manager on the orthopedic floor. In this paper I will discuss the organization of Methodist West and my preceptor’s responsibilities, leadership style and her role in the organization in detail.

Organizational Analysis

Methodist West is located in West Des Moines, Iowa and was built in October of 2009. Methodist West is affiliated with Iowa Health Des Moines, which includes; Methodist, Lutheran, Blank, and Methodist West. Methodist west is approximately a 50 bed hospital, but built for expansion. Services provided by this organization include; Orthopedic services, emergency treatment, maternity, surgery, outpatient services, radiology, and cardiovascular and pulmonary services. The mission, vision, and values at Methodist West are the same as those at all of Iowa Health Des Moines. The mission for this organization is to improve the health of our communities through healing, caring and teaching. The vision statement is “Best outcome for every patient every time.” This organization has four main values and are called the “core values” the values are; compassion, openness, respect, and excellence” www.iowahealth.org (2012)

Leadership Analysis

At Methodist West the chain of command is as follows; staff take issue to nurse manager of the floor (my preceptor), then the issue goes on to the executive director, and finally to the Methodist West administration chief clinical officer. According to K. Braafhart, RN, BSN the formal leaders in this organization would include; managers, supervisors, and administrative positions. Informal leaders include; patient care facilitators, charge nurses, preceptors, and some front line staff.
