There are many skills that everyone has but, there are also many that everyone could benefit from that they do not have. One skill that I think everyone could benefit from is Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR. Yes, it is a skill that does not get used everyday. Think about it from a victims stand point. Most victims that need CPR are knocking on death’s door so to speak. The things you learn in CPR can give the victim a better chance of survival. When you take a CPR class you not only learn how to keep a person’s heart beating and air in their lungs. You also learn how the Heimlich Maneuver. You also learn CPR procedures and the Heimlich Maneuver for infants.
I had a co-worker that was having some heart troubles a few years ago and the military doctors could not find anything wrong with him and sent him home. No sooner than he walked in the door of his house he fell over dead. His wife new CPR and she began performing it while she was on the phone with 911. When the paramedics arrived he was still unconscious and they used a defibrillator to bring him back. With out his wife knowing CPR he would have died.
Everyone prays they will never be put in a situation where they will need to know these skill but accidents happen. If you do not know CPR you will only be able to call 911 to help the victim. While you are watching the victim suffer waiting on an emergency worker time is ticking away for the victim. If you know CPR you can send someone else to call 911 while you start CPR, increasing the victim’s chance of survival. Another way to look at needing to know CPR is one of your loved ones being the victim of an accident and died, and if the person who found them would have know CPR would have saved their life.
