My first article was about Maria, A San Francisco Bay Area community college student who was wanting to work in the healthcare industry was not sure how to follow her desires. Then, her high school created a health academy. This helped prepare her for the real world of work and post secondary education opportunities that came along with it. Maria started to take classes that helped her relate knowledge and skills to the health academy at high school. Maria and fellow team members were required to organize a local family outreach campaign showcasing health care services at the community clinic. After six months, enrollment in pre-natal services increased by 50 percent. Maria gained more experience by interning at a community hospital. Eventually, Maria was able to earn an EMT certificate at community college. With this she was able to start her healthcare career while furthering her education. Maria’s success shows that academic preparation is necessary considering jobs requiring post secondary education will rise to 63 % in the next decade. This can prepare students for greater success after high school to advance their education and career skills.
