There are many psychological factors that can influence individuals to start smoking tobacco. Personal characteristics like one not having confidence in him or her self and for some individuals smoking is a way of coping with anxiety, sadness, anger and daily stress. Some teens might start smoking as a way to get attention and for acceptance. Yet another reason why one would choose to start smoking is, the fact glamorous people in Hollywood smoke, and magazine ads show individuals who smoke have that confident in control look. Other reasons could be that individuals who smoke feel that a cigarette will calm their nerves, it will satisfy their cravings and will give them an energy boost (Colby, 2009).

However, a number of studies show that young individuals smoke, or increase the amount smoked because at least one of his or her parents smokes. In addition, a friend or family member that the individual hangs out with also smokes tobacco. This could also mean that the young individual does not feel that his or her parents are concerned, and because his or her parents smoke, they encourage it (Sarafino, 2011).

Most of the places of employment have become smoke free, and smoking is no longer allowed inside buildings, airplanes, buses, trains, some restaurants and ships. The reason for a smoke free workplaces is the fact that smoking is dangerous to smokers and to non-smokers as well. The effects of smoking are unhealthy. Whether it is direct or second- hand smoke, the effects of smoking are the same for both. Smoking can cause respiratory problems, lung cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Tobacco smoke contains 4,000 chemicals, and 250 of those chemicals have been identified as hazardous (Carnes, 2010).

Tobacco has an unpleasant odor that makes a smoker's garments, breath and hair smell. Another reason that workplaces are banning smoking is the effect of smoking on productivity. An employee who smokes could be stressed...
