Cisco Systems, founded in 1984 is the world’s largest provider of internet networking and communications equipment (www.hbr.org). They are the A-Z Networking Solution Company. Headquartered in San Jose, California, they have more than 460 offices in 165 countries; employ more than 70,000 individuals globally (24,000 of them are engineers).
Cisco is an innovative company, their vision is for their technology to change people every day lives. Their innovative creations help customers monitor and reduce their energy using Energy Wise to improving the work-life balance of their employees through a system called LifeConnections.
Cisco takes a holistic approach to corporate social responsibility in their value chain. To maintain their high standards of ethics, labor rights, health and safety, and the environment throughout the value chain, they must work close with their suppliers (Fryer & Stewart, 2008).
Their strategy is keeping sustainability in all of their business practices, maintaining a constant work relationship with their suppliers, and teaming up with several organizations to develop tools to identify a wide range of sustainability challenges in the ICT value chain.
Cisco established CSR governance approach reflects their company culture, business strategy, and structures. In an interview with CEO, John Chambers, he indicates
“consumer is driving that in the past IT and network-enabled market transitions were driven by businesses, but most IT market transitions today” (Fryer & Stewart, 2008, p. 76)..
