Inventory Systems Summary

Inventory control systems vary with each organization. Organizations that have to keep a log on what products come in and what goes out needs to have a system that is scanned or rely on employees with good data entry skills. In the medical field data entry and paper documents verify what stock is in the office and whether there is a loss or profit from insurance carriers. In this paper, we will discuss the importance of different inventory systems ranging from barcoding, control inventory, inventory management, and Dr. Chrono system. Each inventory has an advantage and a disadvantage to their system.

Managing inventory in a hospital setting is a very important task when it comes to using a barcode system. It is nice to use a program that utilizes a barcode system because hospitals can use it to control the inventory supply, as well as keeping track of all equipment throughout the hospital. At the community hospitals, inventory functions can basically be broken down in two categories such as using the barcodes to locate equipment and keeping stockroom applications traceable. Certain items such as medication, supplies, equipment, and diagnostic tools are something that barcodes can track.

Over the last past couple of years; the community hospital has implemented the barcode system to track medical devices throughout the hospital. “The use of barcode technology at a patient’s bedside care has shown impressive gains in reducing medication error, which may account for as many as 7,000 deaths per year in U.S. hospitals (IOM, 2000)”. Barcodes provide a valuable substantiation of medication management assuring that the staff is implementing the time that medication was given, right route, and the correct dosage.
